Hardware Questions Every System Administrator Must Know!

πŸ’‘ Being a System Administrator isn’t just about software & cloud – hardware knowledge is equally critical!

πŸ–₯️ Key Hardware Concepts for System Admins

1️⃣ Processor (CPU)

✔ Clock Speed – Measured in GHz, determines how fast a CPU executes instructions.

✔ Cores & Threads – More cores/threads = better multitasking and performance.

✔ Cache – L1, L2, and L3 caches store frequently used data for quick access.

✔ Architecture – x86 (32-bit) vs. x64 (64-bit), impacts software compatibility.

2️⃣ Memory (RAM)

✔ Types – DDR3, DDR4, DDR5 (faster speeds, lower power consumption).

✔ ECC vs. Non-ECC – ECC (Error-Correcting Code) RAM is used in servers for data integrity.

✔ Latency & Frequency – Lower latency and higher frequency improve performance.

✔ Memory Channels – Single, Dual, and Quad channels impact memory bandwidth.

3️⃣ Storage

✔ HDD vs. SSD – SSDs are faster, more reliable, and consume less power than HDDs.

✔ NVMe vs. SATA – NVMe SSDs use PCIe lanes, offering much higher speeds than SATA.

✔ RAID Levels – RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring), RAID 5/6 (parity), RAID 10 (striping + mirroring).

4️⃣ Power Supply (PSU)

✔ Wattage Calculation – Ensuring sufficient power for all components.

✔ Efficiency Ratings – 80 Plus Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Titanium (higher efficiency = less power loss).

✔ Redundancy – Dual PSU setups in critical systems for failover protection.

5️⃣ Motherboard

✔ Chipsets – Determines CPU compatibility and feature set.

✔ Sockets – LGA (Intel) vs. PGA (AMD), affects CPU compatibility.

✔ Expansion Slots – PCIe slots for GPUs, storage, and networking cards.

6️⃣ Cooling & Thermal Management

✔ Air vs. Liquid Cooling – Liquid cooling is more efficient but requires maintenance.

✔ Thermal Paste – Ensures proper heat transfer between CPU and cooler.

✔ Heat Sinks & Fans – Essential for dissipating heat and preventing thermal throttling.

✔ Airflow Optimization – Proper intake & exhaust management for system cooling.

7️⃣ Networking

✔ NIC Types – 1GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE, Fiber NICs for different bandwidth needs.

✔ Switches & Routers – VLANs, port aggregation, and Layer 3 switching.

✔ Network Redundancy – NIC teaming, failover, and load balancing.

8️⃣ BIOS vs. UEFI

✔ Boot Process – UEFI is faster and more secure than BIOS.

✔ Secure Boot & TPM – Ensures OS integrity and prevents unauthorized bootloaders.

✔ Firmware Updates – Regular updates improve stability, compatibility, and security.

9️⃣ Server Hardware

✔ Blade vs. Rack vs. Tower Servers – Each has use cases based on space and scalability.

✔ BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) – Used for remote server monitoring.

✔ iLO/iDRAC/IPMI – Remote hardware management tools for enterprise servers.

Top 10 high-level EC2 scenario-based questions to challenge your AWS & DevOps skills

Here are 10 high-level EC2 scenario-based questions to challenge your AWS & DevOps skills 1. Your EC2 instance is running but you can’t connect via SSH. What troubleshooting steps will you take?  Check Security Group inbound rules (port 22 open to your IP).  Verify Network ACLs (NACLs not blocking inbound/outbound).  Confirm instance’s Public IP / Elastic IP.  Validate Key Pair and correct permissions on .pem.  Ensure SSM Agent is installed (Session Manager can help).  Check system logs on the console for OS-level issues. 2. You terminated an EC2 instance by mistake. How can you prevent this in the future? Enable Termination Protection in EC2 settings. Use IAM permissions to restrict TerminateInstances. Tag critical instances and set resource policies. 3. Your EC2 instance needs to access an S3 bucket securely. What’s the best way to configure this? Best practice: Attach an IAM Role with least privilege policy to the EC2 instance. Avoid hardcoding...

GitOps-Driven Management of VKS Clusters: Enabling GitOps on VCF 9.0 (Part 03)

GitOps-Driven Management of VKS Clusters: Enabling GitOps on VCF 9.0 (Part 03) In the Part-02 blog, we walked through the process of deploying an Argo CD instance within a vSphere Namespace on  VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 , enabling a GitOps-based approach to manage Kubernetes workloads in a vSphere environment. With Argo CD successfully installed, we now have a powerful toolset to drive declarative infrastructure and application delivery. In this blog post, we’ll take the next step by demonstrating how to  provision and manage VKS clusters  directly through the Argo CD  UI and CLI . This allows us to fully operationalise GitOps within the private cloud, delivering consistency, scalability, and automation across the Kubernetes lifecycle. Importance of Managing the Kubernetes Cluster with a Gitops Approach Adopting a GitOps-based approach for managing Kubernetes clusters enables declarative, version-controlled, and automated operations by leveraging Git a...
